Cary has spent 15+ years serving in various executive and consulting positions involving both clinical practice and medical leadership. He has held positions in several different settings including network model HMOs, IPA model HMOs and staff model HMOs. He has also been the medical director of an HMO PHO as well as of a large hospital-owned medical group. These diverse experiences have enabled Dr. Gutbezahl to build a collection of skills and knowledge that are unrestricted by traditional health care organizations’ boundaries.
Cary frequently assists health care organizations who desire to enhance their effectiveness in managing clinical care and reducing utilization. Through a systematic approach and an emphasis on the need to design and manage clinical care using process management techniques, Cary helps his clients achieve sustainable change. This technique requires that organizations develop the ability to use non-accounting management information and improve their use of data and decision making. Building upon 20+ years of database design and data analysis experience, Dr. Gutbezahl works with his clients to define their information needs and to leverage existing information technology.
Dr. Gutbezahl's clients have included large employers, managed care organizations, multi-hospital organizations, community hospitals, physician groups and other health care organizations. Although improving utilization is the most common project, other projects have involved a wide range of services including designing data analysis systems, establishing a physician compen- sation system, teaching process management techniques and training medical directors.
A graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Gutbezahl completed his residency at Barnes Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Gutbezahl is board certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking.
